A Fresh Perspective on Dublin's Docklands History

Dublin's Docklands tells a story of constant change, and right in its heart sits St. Laurence O'Toole's National School on Seville Place. It’s been a community cornerstone since the mid-19th century, witnessing the area's evolution firsthand. Recently, I had the brilliant opportunity to photograph its latest chapter: a significant transformation by Van Dijk Architects, completed in April 2022. My goal was to capture how their design masterfully blends Dublin's rich history with a bold, modern vision for education.

Unifying the Past, Designing for the Future

For over 170 years, separate boys' and girls' schools existed side-by-side here. Van Dijk Architects' core task was not just renovation but unification. They aimed to move away from the site's previously somewhat "austere and defensive" character, creating an "open and welcoming" space for students and the community – a philosophy focused on the experience of being in the building. This involved restoring the original Victorian limestone structures and linking them with a striking contemporary extension made of glass and Corten steel.

Capturing the Dialogue: Stone Meets Steel

Photographing the exterior presented a fascinating challenge: capturing the dialogue between the weathered, historic stonework and the sharp lines of the new Corten steel addition. This weathering steel, with its evolving russet patina, offers a compelling contrast. While the architects cited visual sympathy with the existing brick and stone, one can also see how its robust character resonates with the Docklands' industrial past and perhaps offers durability in our maritime climate. Getting the right angles to show this interplay, with the backdrop of Seville Place and the nearby St. Laurence O'Toole Church, was key.

Revealing Layers Within

The sensitivity of the project extends indoors. Van Dijk Architects deliberately left historic ashlar stonework exposed in places, allowing the building's Victorian bones to remain visible. They also used breathable cork-infused lime plaster instead of cement – a nod to traditional building conservation that respects the old materials. These textural details, the roughness of old stone against smooth new finishes, create wonderful photographic moments that tell the story of the building's layers.

A Burst of Colour: The Rainbow Playground

One of the most visually arresting elements is the new playground. A vibrant rainbow radiates outwards from the historic church building, created using a colourful, safe surface (likely EPDM rubber). The architects intended this "sharp contrast" to create a "fun and exciting backdrop" for the children. Photographing this space meant capturing not just the colours, but the sheer joy and energy it brings – a powerful symbol of the school's focus on its pupils and its welcoming new chapter.

My recent project with Roadstone, a leading provider of building materials here in Ireland, gave me a brilliant opportunity to showcase the scale, power, and precision of their operations. This post highlights images from one of their quarries, demonstrating my ability to deliver high-quality photography for corporate clients. I focused on their impressive new fleet of Komatsu WA800 wheel loader and HD605 dump trucks.

Showcasing Scale and Strength

The image above sets the scene with the mammoth brand new machinery ready for action. These aren't just any trucks; they represent Roadstone's commitment to lowering their environmental impact while providing top-quality aggregates, cement, and building products across the country. Did you know that each of these trucks can carry a payload of over 90 tonnes? That's the equivalent of roughly 18 adult elephants! The wheel loader can carry even more at 115 tons!

This shoot presented unique challenges – the scale of the location, moving heavy machinery, and the ever-present dust required careful planning and execution. The result is a testament to my ability to deliver top-quality results in demanding environments.

The Human Element

While the machinery is impressive, it's the skilled workforce that brings it all to life. This image captures a team of Roadstone employees, a powerful reminder that behind every piece of heavy equipment, there are dedicated professionals ensuring the smooth delivery of materials. I find it important to show the human connection and show their expertise. It can draw in the viewer, and a potential client.

Capturing the Dynamics

This dynamic shot captures the Komatsu vehicles in motion descending into the quarry, a powerful visualization of the ongoing activity and sheer scale location. These images convey the energy and productivity of the site. I tried to bring the image alive by using a larger aperture to blur the foreground and add a sense of scale.

Imposing Presence: Up Close

This close-up of the Komatsu HD605 emphasizes its imposing presence. The low angle and tight framing highlight the massive scale, giving you a sense of what it's like to stand before one of these industrial giants. You can see every intricate part of the massive truck. I'm committed to capturing the detail that matters to industrial clients.

Capacity and Environment

This image provides a holistic view, showcasing the impressive capacity of the truck's bed, those huge tyres and the dramatic backdrop of the quarry. The angle emphasizes the scale of both the truck and its surroundings. To me this image says "Let's go accomplish something big!"

Driving Results: From Quarry to Web

This striking image of the Komatsu HD605 in motion, with its deliberate motion blur, perfectly encapsulates the energy of Roadstone's operations. This very image was adapted for a web banner, demonstrating my ability to create visuals that are impactful both in print and online. The one photo was able to be used across multiple formats.

This collection of images from the Roadstone project represents just a small sample of what I can achieve as a photographer. My recent project for Roadstone, photographing their hardscaping at a Victorian renovation in Rathgar, was a perfect example. The challenge? To showcase the texture, quality, and versatility of their paving stones, wall blocks, and cement finishes, transforming them from everyday materials into something inspiring. This wasn't just any project; it was Tranquility House, a Julian Benson Foundation initiative providing accommodation for children with Cystic Fibrosis and their families while receiving treatment in Dublin, and featured on RTE's "Room to Improve."

This image is all about contrast. Roadstone's textured cement finish, applied to the exterior, creates a striking visual against the warm wood above. My goal was to capture this interplay of textures, making a potentially "boring" subject compelling. I used a polarizer to enhance colors and reduce reflections, and a strobe to control shadows and dramatically highlight the cement's texture – something natural light alone couldn't achieve. This also shows the versatility of Roadstone's products, suitable for both modern and period properties.

Pattern, Scale, and Perspective

This overhead shot reveals the larger pattern of Roadstone's paving stones. The diagonal composition adds dynamism, drawing the eye across the surface. A strobe was crucial here, too, maintaining consistent illumination and highlighting the subtle texture variations. The hedge provides a contrasting element of softscaping, showing how hardscaping integrates into a complete landscape. To keep the focus on the paving, I used AI-powered editing to remove my tripod – a modern solution for a clean image.

Zooming in, this detail shot emphasizes the tactile quality of the materials – the fine grain of the paving stones and the rugged texture of the wall blocks. Soft, diffused natural light, combined with a polarizer to deepen colors and reduce glare, ensured an accurate representation of Roadstone's craftsmanship.

Tranquility House

These materials, however, are only part of the story. This image shows the Roadstone paving and wall blocks in their true context: Tranquility House, a Victorian renovation in Rathgar. This Julian Benson Foundation project provides respite and support for families affected by Cystic Fibrosis. Featured on RTE's "Room to Improve," the project showcases the transformative power of thoughtful design and high-quality materials. The sculpture adds an artistic touch, demonstrating how hardscaping can contribute to a space that's both functional and inspiring. It was a privilege to photograph this beautiful space and highlight Roadstone's contribution.

Transforming a cluttered industrial space into a showcase for modern modular design? That was my latest challenge as a Dublin-based architectural photographer. My recent project for McAvoy, a leader in modular construction, perfectly embodied this challenge. They had designed and installed a QSpace unit for Kylemore Cars, a forward-thinking car dealership located at the M50 Business Park in Dublin 12.

This QSpace, a rapidly deployable, prefabricated office space, needed to be showcased in a way that highlighted its modern, modular design with its bold red and white colour blocking, large windows, and integrated ramp. The design of the Qspace subtly blends with the dealership's aesthetic. However, the location presented a unique set of obstacles, being a bustling commercial environment, brimming with industrial elements and the constant hum of activity. My goal was to overcome these challenges and capture the QSpace's features, transforming the space into a visually compelling subject, highlighting its sleek design and modern aesthetic.

As you can see from the above image, I had very little space to work with. The office is not far offset from the main building and there were many cars around with little to no room to move them. There was also some construction barrier tape and muck and other distractions behind the fence. And some big high voltage power lines in the background. Below is one of 3 images shot of the exterior after post-production retouching removed those distracting elements and enhance its visual appeal.

Moving on to the interior, there was a bit of clutter I had to work around. The staff were very helpful and were even willing to do some modelling work.

I loved the bright colors in the offices at both ends. They also had the expansive glass walls that made the QSpace feel much larger than I expected.

The client didn't have the budget to clean up all of the wires and distractions in post-production like I've done in the above image. Look in the gallery and you can see the same room with the clutter left in. It's worth spending extra time to take an image to its next level. But to save on your budget, we give clients the opportunity to select which ones they would be more likely to use prominently and focus our time on those.

A couple of other notes about my methods. This series used only natural light since it was well lit. In post-production, the modern "digital darkroom" of Photoshop, I corrected colour casts, blended images that used a polariser to remove reflections, and took the best pose of any people in the image. I shot over 300 images to produce those you will see below in the gallery. I'm a little obsessed with getting the best images possible :)

And finally, a few notes for the photo geeks :) This was all shot on a Sony Alpha 1, using 3 lenses (Sony 24mm G master, Sigma 50 f1.4 ART, and Canon 17mm TS-E). Images were composited and blended in Photoshop. A polarizer was used to enhance colours and reduce reflections.
